002: More Questions Than Answers

When I first became interested in neuroscience, it wasn't because I was looking for another teaching strategy.

Neuroscience happened to me.

My principal introduced our staff to neuroeducation, and like any professional learning opportunity, I was excited to learn. I've always loved asking questions and understanding why things work. At the same time, my family was navigating life after someone I love experienced a traumatic brain injury. Learning about the brain during the school day while trying to understand brain injury, recovery, and healing outside of school felt... complicated.

At first, those felt like two completely separate worlds. One was my kindergarten classroom. The other was my family's story.

But somewhere along the way, they began to overlap.

The more I learned about how the brain changes, adapts, and learns, the more I found myself looking at my students differently, not because neuroscience suddenly gave me all the answers. It didn't.

It gave me better questions.

I have no idea what brain-informed teaching is supposed to look like (yet). I don't know the perfect morning routine, exactly how much movement is enough, or how to teach children about neuroplasticity in a way that feels authentic instead of gimmicky. I don't know how to balance wonder with standards, curiosity with curriculum, or twenty-four beautifully different brains with one very human teacher.

And maybe that's okay.

Because I don't think neuroscience is giving me a blueprint. I think it's teaching me to ask better questions.

I want to know what happens when children understand how their brains learn. What happens when teachers begin understanding attention before behavior? What happens when movement isn't a reward but part of instruction? What happens when belonging becomes a learning strategy instead of an afterthought? What happens when classrooms are designed around how brains learn instead of how we've always done school?

I don't know all the answers, but I think those questions are worth asking.

So this isn't a website where I'll pretend to have neuroscience figured out. It's a place where I'll wrestle with ideas, try things, read the research, reflect honestly, celebrate what works, and learn from what doesn't. My hope is to build a community of educators who are curious enough to wonder alongside me.

Maybe my goal isn't to become an expert. Maybe it's to become the kind of teacher who never stops asking,

What does this brain need?

Because I have a feeling that's a pretty good place to start.
